Summary |
Beth David Synagogue had the privilege to attend the 58th annual NCCJ Citation Award Dinner on Wednesday, November 6th, 2024. Our synagogue was regarded as an Inclusion Champion as we were invited to honor the work of Ellen W. “Lennie” Gerber and Dr. Henry “Hank” W.B. Smith, III.
Lennie Gerber’s work was recognized due to her advocacy for marriage equality and endless support for the civil rights of all people. Her experience in academia and law propelled her work in the fight for equity, alongside her personal experience living with her wife of 52 years. Gerber’s efforts to secure equality for the LGBTQ+ community and advance the rights of women made her a phenomenal candidate for the 2024 Citation Award.
Beth David’s designation as an Inclusion Champion allowed our organization to acknowledge our own honoree – someone who we felt embodied the morals and values of the NCCJ Citation Award Honorees of the past. It was our pleasure to uphold Past President & Board of Trustees member, Lewis Weinstock as our 2024 Inclusive Leader. In his time at Beth David Synagogue, Weinstock held a variety of roles, including volunteer leadership positions. He demonstrated a commitment to fairness and equality, exemplified by his leadership with a change in the by-laws that allowed both adults in multi-faith families to be equal members of Beth David. Additionally, in his recommendations for future board members, he demonstrated inclusivity in board composition. According to Vivian Sheidler, current president of Beth David, Weinstock is highly respected for not only his religious acumen but also his ability to thoughtfully analyze situations for their impact on all congregants. He is a profound asset to Beth David.
Our organization is grateful to have attended the 58th annual NCCJ Citation Award Dinner to honor our very own Lennie Gerber, and we are honored to take this opportunity to spotlight our past president Lewis Weinstock and all the wonderful work he has done for our community.
